Raw – Finished

This is my final outcomes for my raw project, I added wicks to my icebergs , and placed my polar bears on top. I placed these on to shredded cardboard which I sprayed blue. I like the effect that it has given the work.

Feeling Inspired By Light …

I find light a very inspiring thing, i always have, I love the shadows it creates, the patterns, even the smell. one of my first memories of feeling inspired by light is when i visited Sagrat Cor in Barcelona, the impact that the thousands of candles had on the outstanding architecture and the meaning and love they were lit with made me feel a very intense feeling. I felt this same feeling when i went to Notre Dame.

Light is a very inspiring thing …

Candle Research

Candles have been used for thousands of years and up until the early 1900’s they were the single source for artificial light. Candles have a rich tradition in religious services in many faiths throughout history. Today the candle is no longer the solo source of light but is still used in abundance in religious services, as well as birthday celebrations, holidays and home decorations. Originally they were made from tallow, which was extracted from cattle in early Egyptians and roman times. During the middle ages candles became more prevalent in worship, it was the first time beeswax was used t make candles. these beeswax candles were made much like the Romans made their candles with tallow. Beeswax was a drastic improvement from the tallow, but limited quantities were available, which made it expensive, limiting it to clergy and the upper class. It was in the middle of the 19th century that paraffin wax was first used. This led to the commercial production of paraffin, which is an oil distilled. paraffin burned clean, bright and without odor. Today with candle market having a huge variety of candles, using paraffin, vegetable waxes, beeswax and gel waxes. They come in many colours shapes and smells.
