Group Tutorial

Group Tutorial with Amelia Johnstone – Beyond Fiction

We had a group tutorial where we presented our ideas and received feedback from a tutor and several other students. I presented my idea about the different masks representing the different stages of the ballerinas life. The feedback i received was that it may be more interesting to focus on one mask and possibly try staging it it different settings, also to have one mask but add to and therefore changing it, or to have it decay. Another point that was brought up was that the Latin meaning for mask was Persona or Personality. I found this fact very inspiring and a further jumping off point which could develop my project further in to a more meaningful project. I found this tutorial very helpful and it has given me things to think about, i also found it interesting to her how other people responded to my ideas and how they thought it could work or how certain changes could help my piece.

Initial Ideas for Beyond Fiction

Initial Ideas for project

For this project i have had some initial ideas. I started with what objects i was most drawn to. Which for me are my figurine of a ballerina, which i bought from a charity shop, I love the brassy colour with the black patches. I really like the way it looks as she is not in a typical ballerina pose. She looks vulnerable and almost naive and childlike. The other items i was most drawn to are my photographs of my grandmother and her family. I feel these two objects could work well together to create a really interesting story narrative.

These are the objects that i am most drawn to.

Beyond Fiction Briefing

For our first briefing on my Beyond Fiction project we were told to explore the telling and discovering of stories. We were told to think about this by possibly relating real events, objects and evidence to develop new narrative forms. we are able to take this project in any direction and form we want for the visual narrative. We could do this with objects, photographs, performance, music, films, etc.

To start this project, we were asked to collect found objects, images, old newspapers, letters, postcards, or anything else we could think of or find.  these will then lead to the inspiration for our narrative.

We were given a list of key references of artists to look at which i feel will be beneficial to my project.

I am excited to go and start this project, and see what interesting things i can find.
