Inspiration

As a silversmith artist Theresa Nguyen loves the creative process of designing and making an object for the first time. She desires that  a finished piece should feel like a beautifully composed piece of music able to be spiritually uplifting, emotionally stirring, inspiring and beautiful.

She is motivated by a sense of wonder about the world around her and her hope is that she will be able to draw from the incredible magic of creation and be able to somehow capture a little of its essence in her work.

Silver has the ability to capture many different emotions, always challenging and extending the boundaries of her creativity, she seeks to make pieces in which I hope to convoy a sense of organic form. incorporating sensuous surfaces, creative movement and flow.

In order for her to capture the beauty of the world, she masters different techniques such as soldering and fold forming.

Why Silver?

Silver is such an attractive metal to work with. Nguyen says it is exceptionally beautiful, and catches the light beautifully. It has wonderful tactile qualities and it is a metal with great charisma. Silver is such a robust and enduring material that is malleable enough to allow her to fully express her creative vision, Silver is simply magic.

Approch

She uses sketches and models and 3d models, and at other times works directly with the metal and allows the metal to evoke and take shape and form organically.

Focus on Work

She has an ongoing appreciation of nature. She has found herself drawing from what she finds in the natural world and expressing that vision in objects so that people can enjoy them and form their own connection with nature.

Here are some more of her works that are my favorites.

My Ideal Object

Theresa Nguyen – Con Brio at Cardiff Museum

My Ideal Object is made by Theresa Nguyen, she has been a silversmith for nine years, which she says allows her to continually explore and stretch her creativity. She likes silver as they require a high level of precision.

Nguyen is interested in soft organic forms, she is acutely aware of the wonders of nature around her and takes delight in recording the changes she sees throughout the seasons.

She works with both exhibitions pieces and client led commissions, but also her studio work is important to her as it is really the fruit of a series of on going aesthetic explorations.

Nguyen has a deep appreciation for beautifully crafted objects and this motivates her to not only stretch the boundaries of her own creativity but also the materials that she works with to produce pieces that are innovative, technically demanding and visually exciting.

I choose this as my ideal object as i think the craftsmanship is beautiful. it is delicate and i am drawn to the organic forms, I am drawn to the material itself but I think I would like to take forward the forms more than the material itself. I have seen this pieces of several times in Cardiff museum and am always drawn to it, so that is why i have decided to choose this object.

Theresa Nguyen’s work

While we were visiting Cardiff Museum I was very drawn to a piece of work by Theresa Nguyen called ‘con brio centerpiece’. I found the silver sculpture very beautiful and extremely interesting. I don’t think this will influence this project directly but i think this artist is amazing at crafting this simple but beautiful structures.

Here are some of my favorite pieces of her work.
