Quotes from Jekyll and Hyde

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Jekyll and Hyde, and i hope they will influence and possibly be shown within my work.

  • “If he be Mr. Hyde” he had thought, “I shall be Mr. Seek.”
  • “It is one thing to mortify curiosity, another to conquer it. ”
  • “If I am the chief of sinners, I am the chief of sufferers also.”
  • “With every day, and from both sides of my intelligence, the moral and the intellectual, I thus drew steadily nearer to the truth, by whose partial discovery I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck: that man is not truly one, but truly two.”
  • “You must suffer me to go my own dark way.”
  • “I sat in the sun on a bench; the animal within me licking the chops of memory; the spiritual side a little drowsed, promising subsequent penitence, but not yet moved to begin.”
  • “There comes an end to all things; the most capacious measure is filled at last; and this brief condescension to evil finally destroyed the balance of my soul.”
  • “I learned to recognize the thorough and primitive duality of man; I saw that, of the two natures that contended in the field of my consciousness, even if I could rightly be said to be either, it was only because I was radically both.”
  • “Here then, as I lay down the pen and proceed to seal up my confession, I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end.”
  • “I incline to Cain’s heresy,” he used to say quaintly: “I let my brother go to the devil in his own way.”
  • “Jekyll had more than a father’s interest; Hyde had more than a son’s indifference.”
  • “All human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil: and Edward Hyde, alone, in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil.”

Fragmented Self

I have been looking into the story of Jekyll and Hyde and i am very drawn to the aspect of two parts existing within one being. I want to look at how these parts work together to create a whole whether or not that makes a complete whole or a fragmented distorted whole.

This image i feel shows the aspect i am trying to portray.

I want to do more work on the fragmented image which i hope to show soon.

Split Personalities

Through my research on jekyll and hyde i have found one thing very intriguing, the concept of split personalities, the two parts living together in one body, one mind. so i did some research on split personalities.

Split personality disorder is an effect of severe trauma during early childhood, usually extreme, repetitive, physical, sexual or emotional abuse. Most people have experienced mild dissociation like day dreaming or getting lost in the moment while working on a project, However dissociative identity disorder is a sever form of dissociation, a mental process, which produces lack of connection in a persons thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. Dissociative identity disorder is thought to stem from trauma experienced by the person with the disorder. The dissociative aspect is thought to be a coping mechanism- the person literally dissociates himself from a situation or experience that’s too violent, traumatic or painful to assimilate with his or her conscious self.

I have found this very interesting and will continue to pursue this line of research to gain the imagery and concept i want my medals to have.
